How to Spot a Real Polymath Vs a Wannabe?

With the emergence of the fake guru and everything scam culture, leading to many people questioning whether even a pair of pinstripe socks they want to buy can be trusted or not, the need to effectively spot the real deal turned into pretty much a standard. So, how to spot a real polymath vs a wannabe? And why would someone want to be a polymath in the first place?
